Precious Desire

What do I desire? What makes me happy?  I desire to be loved, cherished, valued and esteemed. What’s good is perceived externally through my body sensory experience (sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch), emotions and hormones.  In the same way, the same can be said about my worth and how others perceive me. These experiences passes into my mind and satisfies my heart’s desires. The bible says that God made everything good, including me!

And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

GEN 1:31 ESV

Some desires are good for my well being while others are not. Sin came into the world through satan’s temptation, causing me to have desires contrary to God’s commands, like lust.

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.

Genesis 3:6 ESV

In our world, the value or worth of a thing or person that we perceive is tied closely with our heart’s desires, and the higher the desire, the harder to get. The world found a way out of it using money to measure these values and desires. Isn’t this economics? Demand and supply – the higher the demand, the lower the supply, the greater the cost, well at least most of the time. A heightened level of desire for a thing or person requires a substantial amount of effort and wealth to obtain it. These desires can often trap us unknowingly and the bible cautions us about it.

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.

1 John 2:15‭-‬17 ESV

The bible isn’t far off to state that the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.

1 Timothy 6:10 ESV

Rather than valuing life through money and wealth, God calls us to know and value him more than anything and everything else in this world, and to fear him. We cannot serve both God and money.

“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and  money.

Matthew 6:24 ESV

To fear the Lord and obey Jesus is more important than our desires. Sometimes it does not make sense and may not be logical from our perspective. But let us consider God’s thoughts and his love for us.

For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Isaiah 55:9 ESV

There is so much to know about God from the bible. Where do we begin? First, fear God, thats where we start.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Proverbs 1:7 ESV

Let us learn be aware that there is a God who values us as his child when we hear and obey his voice. May you fear God and he will value you to be beautiful in his sight.

Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.

Proverbs 31:30 ESV

Only God matters when we pass away,

Trust and obey Jesus Christ today.
